WooPayments and Stripe charge the same for US online card payments, 2.9% + 30¢. The differences are in international cards, in-person payments, and where you manage your account: WooPayments lives inside WooCommerce, while Stripe gives you your own Stripe account that also works with other apps and point-of-sale systems.

What in-person payments cost: a quick example
Card-present fees per sale in the US, before any software or platform fees:

Below about $50, Stripe Terminal costs slightly less per sale; above it, WooPayments does. WooPayments also charges $5 a month for each card reader used three or more times that month, while Tap to Pay on a phone doesn’t count toward that fee.
When WooPayments fits
- You want everything inside WooCommerce, with no separate payment account to manage
- You sell internationally and want the lower international card fee
- You’re happy with the POS in the Woo mobile app for in-person sales
When Stripe fits
- You want your own Stripe account that also works with other apps, such as invoicing, subscriptions or a point of sale
- You want a full in-person POS with stations, staff, receipts and inventory, like Jovvie Point of Sale
- You sell in a country where WooPayments in-person payments aren’t available but Stripe Terminal is
Taking in-person payments with your Stripe account

Is WooCommerce Payments the same as WooPayments?
Yes. WooCommerce Payments was renamed WooPayments in 2023. It’s the payment service built into WooCommerce.
Is WooPayments the same as Stripe?
No, but it’s built on Stripe. With WooPayments you sign up and manage payments inside WooCommerce. With the Stripe extension you connect your own Stripe account and manage it in the Stripe dashboard.
